Hooch tragedy: Vijay Mallya slams Modi government
Mallya believes the deaths caused by spurious liquor in Gujarat should make politicians realise that prohibition is a 'farce' and it cannot be enforced.
“The farce of prohibition which cannot be enforced leads to illegal, unhygienic and unsupervised production of deadly cocktails which claim innocent lives. It is about time that the political masters face reality in the interest of people,” said Mallya, chief of United Breweries, India’s leading liquor company.
Mallya also added that it was high time that Gujarat CM Narendra Modi should rethink the state’s prohibition policy, which he claimed was to blame for liquor smuggling in the state.
Opposition Congress has also been raising the issue in the ongoing session of the Assembly. The party has charged the BJP government with failure to prevent the mounting deaths, and has demanded Minister of State for Home Amit Shah's resignation.
The government has ordered a judicial inquiry into the hooch tragedy in the state, where a prohibition policy is in place.
